Frequently Asked Questions about becoming a Steward

Please reach us at jvancuren.afge@gmail.com or jolley.jason.afge@gmail.com about becoming a steward.

Any dues paying member in good standing, who has been interviewed by union leadership, and is willing to dedicate the time to representing fellow bargaining unit employees in administrative matters between management.

Our local stewards are the front line and face of our union. They are knowledgeable in the AFGE-VA Master Agreement, employee rights, labor law, agency polices, and enforce adherence to them by management when there is a violation. Stewards can also assist with local negotiations, responding to disciplinary actions, and filing grievances.

Stewards are allotted up to 25% of their time while at work for official union  duties. This is what is call "official time" and it is balanced along with the stewards regular job duties with the employing agency. This means a full time employee can use up to 10 hours in a 40 hour work week.

There are times when outside hours are needed for conducting research and meeting with employees on their cases. Each steward gets to decide for themselves when this occurs.

Stewards have no need to worry as each steward is supported by our Chief Stewards, union officers, AFGE attorneys, and national representatives.  If someone doesn't know an answer, we help them find someone who does. We hold a monthly meeting for our stewards so they can receive training and help with cases they are actively working.
